THE WASTELANDS

The city is akin to a living organism in which life constantly flows, however, when the city becomes weary so do its inhabitants. In fact, the physicality of the city has its archeological value and illustrates the reality of human life at any given moment in time.

Every four years, on the eve of the general elections in Iran, cities undergo major changes in their appearance with the addition of election advertisements in the form of  campaign posters, banners and billboards. These advertisements have a life of their own. After being plastered all over the city, they are frequently defaced, torn down or left to fade or disintegrate, and they have lasting effects on the psyche of a city.

This photo series was shot with a Polaroid camera in the city of Kerman during and after the 2018 general elections. It is an archaeology of posters, banners and other forms of political iconography that are crucial to any election that illustrates in a unique way the political unconscious of this Iranian city.
